So…

Is this new Wizarding World/Fantastic Beasts movie part of canon or did they just throw out established history for fun because they could?

The controversial opinion that will have me crucified by the Harry Potter Community… [SPOILERS]

Crimes of Grindelwald was terrible

Hear me out.

I really LOVE the harry potter series. I really do, and while some opinions were mixed on Fantastic Beast, I definately fell in love with that because of the setting and the beast.

So when I remembered this was based on a book, I actually thought it wouldve been a nice move to adapt other stories from the Potterverse (or hell maybe another place for Newt to interact in and learn more about the magical world’s animal species.) but when I first heard that the sequel will continue with the most uninteresting part of the film, Johnny Grindelwald, I lost all interest right away. And i didnt see the trailers either, but I’d still give it a shot because I did hope it could be something interesting.

Well… it wasn’t. Let me explain.

First, let’s look at our protagonist: NEWT SCAMANDER

Now let me first say I LOVED Newt Scamander. His character is someone whom I can relate to due to his apparent condition. So what is my issue with him?

My issue is that this kind of conflict and story doesn’t fit with his character. When I see Newt Scamander, Brother of Theseus Scamandar the War Hero, I don’t see someone who gives a shit about the state of affairs with the Ministry of Magic or the MACUSA, I see a Zoologist who connects and understands the creatures that inhabit the world (And let’s not forget that MACUSA has the mentality of killing them off in order to keep the Wizarding world a secret). As far as I’m aware, Unless Grindelwald is using wild animals against the Wizarding or Muggle Population, this would be a conflict Newt would definately avoid. But he is forced into it… by dumbledore.

When I first heard he was going to be introduced, I thought it would be a flashback to Newt’s days and his fascination with creatures. Jude Law definately does a good job in his portrayal but his role felt, unneeded. Yes, he is a key target of Grindewald’s wrath but he didnt do much in this film aside from Telling Newt to join his cause and pointing him in the french direction.

Then we have the Kowalski and Queenie segment, and keep in mind I LOVE THIS SHIP! I felt that the ending of the first movie was a nice touch of ambiguity as it wouldve left us to speculate if they did get together or not, and in the second movie, the truth is he is revealed to not have his memories removed (because according to the film, the rain couldnt whipe his memories because he didnt have any bad memories) and the way they split is so forced, even though their relationship is something I really love!

Speaking of love… The Tina and Newt thing kinda felt… out of place. I don’t know, this isn’t criticism but a bit of a personal opinion. I always saw Newt and Tina as really close friends, so the fact that newt loved Tina was a thing I felt was pushed in just for drama reasons.

There’s also the fact that the movie has so many plotlines in it that by the end of the movie, I forgot about half of em! And that is just tragic. What’s more is… the title of the beast is underutilized.

I mean… remember the title of the movie?

Fantastic Beast?

I can understand that we did have beast in the movie but not enough of them! The first movie gave us a lot of beast and we got to see what they could do and how they affect their surroundings. And we didn’t have just one, but we had like dozens of creatures and we had plenty of time to see and be amazed by them. In here, we didnt have any time for it. We only had like a couple… but not a lot of time to gaze and wonder, they felt more and more like an after thought.

But let me get into the true issue of the matter… the story.

It may be written by JK Rowling, but it felt like Fanfiction. I mean… Creedence surviving New York? Okay, I get that, Sometimes not everyone is super dead. Grindelwald predicting WW2, Uuhhh… Okay? Nagini being a shapeshifter who would one day end up permanently being a snake? Uuuhhh… Newt having moments where he cares about his brother but then says he would say that he would try to kill him? Wait what?! Creedence is actually Aurelius Dumbledore and he is the secret weapon that will help turn the tides of war for those seeking to free the wizards from the Ministry and its oppressive rule? … I’m done.

Im sorry, I really wanted to love this sequel but I can’t. What’s worse is I didnt give much thought about how much I hated it until the next day… and Holy shit, I needed to write it out of my system.

What’s worse is, there is much more to say about this movie but I dont want to stay here and write a fifty page essay on how bad it was so I’ll wrap it up with this

Fantastic Beast: Crimes of Grindelwald is the worst sequel I have seen to this property and I wish I had a refund for my time!

Crimes of Grindlewald

plltheories102:

Crimes of Grindlewald feels like the middle of something which to be fair it is, it’s the second movie in what will be a five-movie franchise. The movie ends on a cliffhanger, but it should’ve ended about thirty seconds before it did. The way it ended it seemed like it would keep going after Credence or I guess Aurelius exploded a mountainside. In addition to that feeling like it either should have had something after that ending or that exploding mountainside wasn’t needed, the movie also felt like it was going to end after the wizards stopped the spread of the blue fire dragon. Also, the death of Leta was unnecessary and seemed stupid. They cast Zoe Kravitz as the character who was only briefly seen in a photograph in the first movie but had a primary role in Crimes against Grindelwald. The emphasis on her character made it seem like she would be important throughout the movies rather than killed quite quickly doing something she knew would fail and didn’t prolong much. A contested part of the movie is the inclusion or not of Albus’ Homosexuality. A lot of people were annoyed by the fact that the director said his homosexuality wouldn’t be explicit meaning it wouldn’t be directly said. This annoyed me because his sexuality was revealed in 2007 and it’s been a large advancement in rights and public perception of the LGBTQ community. That being said how Crimes of Grindlewald deals with it was more than I was expecting, I was expecting them to be called friends in a tone that suggested something else and that’s it. Instead they did have a character say they were kind of like brothers and Albus interrupted and said they were more which was a step further then what I was expecting. Also, they had the moment with the Mirror of Esired which was used more as showing a memory than his desire. The moment showed that they had made a blood pact and had an intimate moment and without of course physical affection. This blood pact is a lowkey plot point throughout the movie and will definitely be a driving force in the next one because the destruction of it is key for Albus defeating Gellert. Those where the only things that circled around their love and past relationship, and although they did seem to reference it there does need to be a good deal more because their prior relationship is the undermining force for their confrontation. The movie as a whole kind of had me anticipating something that never happened. I’m not saying there was a specific event that I wanted to happen and that’s what I was waiting for, it’s just the whole movie felt like it was leading up to some magical amazing stuff that didn’t come to fruition. I will admit part of that feeling is due to my own anticipation for seeing this movie and the movie itself was interesting and fun for the most part. Overall the movie was a good movie but in comparison to Harry Potter movies as a whole, it definitely could have had some more to it. I think the primary thing that it’s lacking is being based on a book series. Book series have a lot more detail and are easier to whittle down into a movie while still having a lot of foundation for people to already know and for things to be in the movie. This movie is just a script and you can’t buy a novel that was written before this movie. In scripts, you can have a lot of foundation and stuff to work with to help make the movie feel full. Yet this movie doesn’t have that full quality like the first 8 Harry Potters do. I do hope for the next three movies, there is more dimension to the characters, direct mention and frequent mention of Albus’ homosexuality, and a fuller well-rounded movie.

Nerdy Fact #1434: Wonder Woman was originally based on two women: the wife of creator William Marston and one of his former students that both he and his wife had sexual encounters with.

(Source.)

How about you actually name ‘em?

Elizabeth Holloway Marston and Olive Byrne were among a number of women who contributed to the original Wonder Woman, and they’re fascinating people in their own right.

Elizabeth Holloway Marston was a brilliant woman. She earned three university degrees in psychology and law at a time when few women received any tertiary education. She was a successful career woman who assisted her husband with his work and was frequently the breadwinner of the family.

The main reason she was able to continue working after having children? Olive Byrne, who was not simply a casual “sexual encounter”, but the Marstons’ lover and life partner. To enable Elizabeth to work, Olive stayed at home and raised both her and Elizabeth’s children. She also wrote for Family Circle and contributed to Marston’s research.

Elizabeth is credited with pushing her husband to create a female superhero, and after his death she worked hard to preserve his vision for the character, urging DC to employ her as the comic’s editor (she was ignored).

Wonder Woman’s bracelet’s are Olive’s bracelets: Olive was known for wearing a pair of wide silver bracelets, and Marston had these in mind when he envisioned Diana’s bullet-deflecting accessories.

Marston died in 1947, but Elizabeth and Olive continued to live together until the end of their lives.

Wait. Clarification please. Are you telling me that the creator of Wonder WOMAN WAS IN A POLY-AMOROUS RELATIONSHIP?

Yep! They were in a poly relationship and had four children together, two by Elizabeth and two by Olive.

(And for those who’ve asked about sources, the Marstons’ story is covered in detail in The Secret History of Wonder Woman by Jill Lepore and Wonder Woman: The Complete History by Les Daniels)

Wonder Woman was inspired and shaped by not only a man who was incredibly progressive and awesome by todays standards let alone the standards of the day he lived in but also by a fierce, intelligent and awesome bisexual woman

This is one of the many reasons why the ways DC has ruined Wonder Woman in their pursuit of making the book as backwards and heteronormative as possible pisses me off…

Not a fierce and intelligent and awesome bisexual woman.

Two fierce and intelligent and awesome bisexual women.

You are correct :D

Imagine growing up in that house

“Mom wants to see you.”

“Psychology mom or bracelet mom?”

“Bracelet mom.”

According to Lepore, the kids called Elizabeth “Keetie” and Olive “Dotsie”!

That is adorable.

I have reblogged this before and will continue to do it until the day I die. The origin story of WW comics is as fucking great as the character herself.

Fun fact: Olive’s bracelets were a gift from William and Elizabeth, and were basically an alternative to a wedding ring, since she couldn’t legally marry them. Diana’s bracelets, 70+ years later, are a symbol of that relationship.

Another fun fact: There’s a movie coming out about their relationship, starring Luke Evans and Rebecca Hall and Bella Heathcote that was written AND directed by a woman (Angela Robinson)
